Querétaro doesn't get the same headlines as Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta — and that's exactly why people who actually do their research keep choosing it. Safe, clean, modern, and deeply Mexican, it's a city that rewards those who look past the obvious.

The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured mansions, and plazas filled with locals, not tourists. But Querétaro is also a thriving industrial and tech hub, which means excellent infrastructure, reliable internet, and a bilingual professional class that makes daily life remarkably easy for expats.

Cost of living is lower than Guadalajara, Lake Chapala, and far lower than Mexico City. Healthcare is excellent. And with a direct connection to CDMX — three hours by highway or a short flight — you are never truly isolated.

A newer residential area with modern apartments and good amenities. Practical and well-connected, it's popular with young professionals and couples looking for a comfortable, no-fuss base.

San Pedrito Peñuelas

More affordable and more local. Good street food, local tianguis (markets), and a genuine Mexican neighbourhood feel. Less spoken English here, which can be a plus or minus depending on where you are in your journey.

Lomas de Juriquilla

Common Questions

Moving to Querétaro — Your Questions Answered

Is Querétaro safe for expats?

Querétaro is consistently ranked one of the safest states in all of Mexico. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the country across both violent and property crime categories. The state government invests heavily in public safety, and the city has a well-maintained police presence.

Expats living in Querétaro — both in the centro and in residential areas like Juriquilla — routinely describe it as one of the safest places they've lived anywhere. You can walk the historic centre at night, use public transport, and move around the city with a level of ease you simply don't find in many larger Mexican cities.

How does Querétaro compare to San Miguel de Allende?

Both cities are in the Bajío region and have beautiful colonial architecture — but they attract very different kinds of expats. San Miguel de Allende is famous for its large, long-established expat community, art scene, and premium lifestyle. It also comes with a premium price tag and a fairly distinct expat bubble.

Querétaro is larger, more modern, and more integrated. Rents are considerably lower. The city has strong infrastructure — hospitals, international schools, reliable internet — and a growing expat community that tends to mix more with Mexican society. If you want cultural immersion, modern conveniences, and value for money, Querétaro often wins. If you want a large ready-made expat social scene and a slower, more artsy pace, San Miguel may suit you better.

What is the cost of living in Querétaro?

Querétaro is one of the most affordable quality-of-life cities in Mexico. Rents vary significantly by area — a modern apartment in Juriquilla will cost more than a similar unit in Corregidora, but both are extremely affordable by US or Canadian standards.

Groceries, restaurants, and local services are very reasonable. Healthcare is high quality and significantly cheaper than North America. Many expats find they can live comfortably — including dining out regularly and maintaining a good lifestyle — on what would be considered a modest budget back home. We help all our clients build a realistic budget as part of the relocation process.

Can I get residency if I move to Querétaro?

Yes. Mexico's residency system works the same regardless of which city you live in — the process starts at a Mexican consulate in your home country. From there you complete the process in Mexico (called the canje), and your residency card is issued locally.

Temporary Residency is valid for one to four years and can be renewed. Permanent Residency is available after four years of temporary residency. We've helped many clients navigate this process from start to finish, including securing consulate appointments that are often hard to get independently. See our Residency Support page for full details.

What is the weather like in Querétaro?

Querétaro's climate is one of its best-kept secrets. At 1,820 metres above sea level, the city enjoys genuinely spring-like weather for most of the year. Daytime temperatures typically sit between 20–25°C (68–77°F), with cooler evenings dropping to 10–14°C (50–57°F).

There is a rainy season from June to September, but rains are usually afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. There is no humidity, no hurricane risk, and none of the extreme heat you'll find on the coast or in the northern desert states. For people who find tropical heat difficult, Querétaro's altitude climate is genuinely comfortable year-round.

Is Querétaro good for remote workers?

Yes — and it's increasingly popular with remote workers who want to stretch their income without sacrificing quality of life. Internet infrastructure in Querétaro is strong, particularly in Juriquilla and the city centre. Fibre optic connections are widely available. Co-working spaces are growing, and there are good cafés with reliable wifi throughout the centro.

The city's time zone (Central Standard Time) aligns well with US and Canadian business hours. And because Querétaro has a significant international business community, you'll find it easier to navigate daily life in English here than in many other Mexican cities.

Which neighbourhood is best for expats in Querétaro?

Juriquilla is the most established area for expats and affluent Mexican families — it has private gated communities, excellent schools, big-box stores, and a very comfortable feel. If you want neighbours who speak English and a familiar suburban lifestyle with Mexican flair, Juriquilla is usually the answer.

The Centro Histórico suits people who want walkability, culture, and to be right in the heart of a living Mexican city. It's beautiful, safe, and increasingly popular with younger expats and retirees who want an active, urban lifestyle. We help all our clients decide which area fits their priorities as part of our relocation process.

What is healthcare like in Querétaro?

Querétaro has an excellent private healthcare system. Hospital Ángeles Querétaro and Hospital H+ are modern, well-equipped facilities with English-speaking staff and a wide range of specialists. Dental and optical care are also widely available and very affordable.

For expats, private health insurance in Mexico is significantly cheaper than equivalent coverage in the US or Canada, and out-of-pocket costs for consultations and procedures are low. Many clients are genuinely surprised by the quality and affordability of healthcare here. We help all clients understand their healthcare options as part of the relocation process.

Can I bring my pet to Querétaro?

Yes. Mexico is generally very welcoming to pets, and Querétaro is no exception. Dogs and cats can enter Mexico with an up-to-date vaccination record (rabies is essential) and a health certificate issued by a licensed vet within 10 days of travel. Most pets do not require a quarantine period.

Querétaro has good veterinary services, local pet supply stores, and green spaces for dogs. We help clients plan pet relocation as part of our packages — it's one of the details that catches people off guard if they don't plan ahead.

Does My Deztination offer relocation tours in Querétaro?

Yes. Our Querétaro relocation tours are designed to take the guesswork out of choosing this city. You'll visit key neighbourhoods, meet trusted local contacts, see rental properties in your price range, and get an honest on-the-ground picture of daily life — all guided by Dez or one of our local partners.

Clients who do a tour before committing consistently say it was the single most valuable part of their decision-making process. See our Relocation Tours page or Relocation Packages for how to get started.
