The Story of the Petition to Protect
the Los Horcones River
This inspirational community event will build awareness for and education about the Los Horcones River, one of the most beautiful and important freshwater tributaries to Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay.
Every year, millions of tourists from all over Mexico and the world visit Puerto Vallarta. Of these, only a small percentage venture into the Los Horcones River Canyon, and of these, even fewer visit the sculpted granite walls and majestic waterfalls of this pristine natural treasure. Those who are lucky enough to do so are impressed by the biodiversity of this precious gem; a stream of pure water fed by the mountains, starting between pine and oak trees in its upper reaches to the dense tropical forest when its flow approaches the sea.
Along its banks, jaguars, jaguarundis, pumas and ocelots chase deer, coatis, javalinass, and river otters. Above, an abundance of extravagantly feathered birds dart through a forest canopy encrusted with orchids and bromeliads. This river canyon and its wildlife now face myriad threats, but a united community that knows about its natural treasures and cares enough to protect them can ensure a hopeful future.
THE HORCONES RIVER PROVIDES A VITAL HABIT FOR THE MILITARY MACAW, JAGUAR & OTHER AMAZING SPECIES OF MEXICO’S MAGICAL FLORA & FAUNA.
The ground was broken in 2019 to build a dam that would stop the flow of the Los Horcones River. Through street protests, blocking the highway, and campaigning city hall, the residents were able to get temporary closure... but the dam people (pun intended) have submitted new bogus paperwork to try and get the greenlight.
They left a wake of devastation, including dynamiting and bulldozing the rocks and generally making a mess of nature.
SAVE OUR RIVER
www.horcones.org is a project of www.mexicoa.org, a Mexican Asociación Civil (non-profit). Its purpose is to build awareness for and education about the Los Horcones River, one of the most beautiful and important freshwater tributaries to Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay.
The Horcones Project hosts a signature event known as the Festival de Musica Los Horcones, a community event that’s both fun and provides an array of engaging opportunities to learn about this river and connect with those working to protect it into the future.
Our Mission
We are petitioning the buidling of a dam and deforestation of the Rio Los Horcones and working to get the river declared as a Natural Protected Area by the Mexican government.
When we get to 1 million signatures the government has to step in and pass the legislation for the Horcones to be protected - we need another 160,000 signatures to reach this goal.

What is the weather like in Puerto Vallarta?
High Season: From December-April the average daily high temperature is about 81 degrees, with a low at night hovering around 65 degrees. Not too hot during the day & no air conditioner needed!
Low/Rainy Season: From July-November is Puerto Vallarta´s famous rainy season, producing some of the lushest jungles and most beautiful sunsets of the year, the mountains filled with several colors of green foliage and tropical blooms.
Where is Puerto Vallarta?
Puerto Vallarta follows the coast of the Pacific Ocean & shares the same latitude line as Hawaii, making it the best year around weather in the world. Most tourists visit the East coast of Mexico first because they assume that the Caribbean Sea will provide a better ambiance, but once those same people come to Vallarta they realize it’s the only place in Mexico where the tropical ocean is lined with the lush jungle of the Sierra Madre Mountain range.
